New digital filter approach aims to improve chemical measurements

DOD awards pair of Mizzou researchers separate grants totaling nearly $14 million

(University of Missouri-Columbia) The US Department of Defense has awarded two highly competitive Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative awards for 2019 to research teams led by a pair of University of Missouri researchers from the Department of Chemistry. Arthur Suits, a professor of chemistry, and his team will receive up to $6.25 million over the next five years. Tommy Sewell, a professor of chemistry, and his team will receive up to $7.5 million over the next five years.

Columbia researchers examine how our brain generates consciousness -- and loses it

(Data Science Institute at Columbia) In a first of its kind study, researchers from Columbia's Rafael Yuste's Laboratory used cellular resolution in vivo two-photon calcium imaging in mice to investigate changes in the local repertoire of neuronal micro states during anesthesia. The team found that anesthesia disrupts the number of neural patterns by reducing both network micro states and neuronal ensembles in the cortex, and confirmed their findings in micro electrode array recordings from two human subjects. Their results are published today in the journal 'Cell Systems.'

Grant to provide computational modeling support for hypersonic vehicles

(Purdue University) HySonic Technologies LLC, which specializes in the development of computational models for the simulation of flow problems of interest to the defense industry, has received a federal grant worth $140,000.The startup, founded by Carlo Scalo, a Purdue University assistant professor of mechanical engineering, received a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research grant from the Navy.Scalo said the funding will be used to provide computational modeling support toward designing long-lasting and sustainable hypersonic vehicles.

Researchers grow cells in 'paper organs'

(American Chemical Society) Long before scientists test new medicines in animals or people, they study the effects of the substances on cells growing in Petri dishes. However, a 2D layer of cells is a poor substitute for the much more complex 3D structure of tissues in organs. Now, researchers reporting in the ACS journal Nano Letters have used a 3D printer to make paper organs, complete with artificial blood vessels, that they can populate with cells.
